SUPERNATURAL
Walking through the dusty roads of Devagiri, passing the old shiv temple, a temple thousand years old maybe.Near the temple stands the old peepal tree. My great grandfather have also talked about this tree. How old the tree could be, I thought. Then I crossed the village pond, some women were washing clothes near the pond and their children playing near the water. I kept walking, the sun blazing right over my head. Maybe today I was in the mood of collecting memories. Memories of my village, my childhood, how me and my cousins grew up listening stories from our grandmother, and our great grandmother. Stories of life and death and also life after death. "Does life exist after death.",...I thought.
All my cousins have left the village and went to cities for better education and perhaps a better life and future there. Do they still remember these stories...Do they ever miss this village and the part of life they have spent here. My ancesters have lived in this village for years. The thought of leaving Devagiri devastate me. But I'll have to. Just 30 days from today I'll be in a boarding school...The Good shepherd residential school of Ooty. I have been preparing for its entrance for months and finally got selected. Going to boarding school was a trend in my family and being the grandson of the village headman I will have to carry this legacy forward.
Then comes the village well. I kept walking. I then just remembered a story told by my grandmother about a witch whose feets were turned backward. Witches always have their feets turned backward. "Have you ever seen someone with such feets", I asked my grandmother once. She then just smiled and said nothing leaving me more curious and angry. There were lots of myth in my village. A myth like a ghost lives in the peepal tree of our village.
Today I'm 15 year old, Abhishek Rao, an aspiring scientist who don't give a shit to all these myth. There are lot of things that need to be changed in this village, maybe I could do something for them in future, was my thought.
ONE MONTH LATER....
It was 6:40 in the morning when I woke up from bed. I have to reach the school assembly by 7:30. I got bit anxious as I don't want to spoil my reputation from the very beginning. Just then a maid entered my room. She understood my situation and hurriedly helped me pack my books and also made my bed. I thanked her for this kind gesture. She replied it's OK as she is a mother too. She told me about her daughter, Lakshmi, with whom she lives in the servant quarters at the end of the campus. She told me that I can call her Sumitra auntie. Thank God I reached the assembly on time.
3 months have passed and now I'm well adjusted in this hostel life, eventhough, I miss home-cooked food sometimes. I'm in good terms with my lecturers but have made less friends comparatively, maybe due to my shyness, maybe other boys think I'm nerd or maybe an old school guy or something. It's evening time and I today decided to explore the unexplored area of the campus. Strolling through the basketball court and passed the garden and horse riding area, I reached the end of the campus near the servant quaters. There I saw a girl, 12 year old maybe with flowers in her hand, a mixture of red and yellow flowers. There was something different in her presence. I asked her name to which she replied...'Lakshmi'. I assumed her to be Sumitra auntie's daughter. Her voice were as polite as her mother. Her eyes as beautiful as a doe.
Wheatish complexion just like her mother. Next day I went there just in a hope to find her again. And to my surprise she was there at the same place. We soon became good friends. With her I don't feel lonely. Now I always waited for the evening so that I can meet a her.
One fine day we went to the well behind servant quarters. 'Nobody sees me here with a girl ' I prayed. 'Skipping games to meet her'. Then suddenly something happened, my eyes went to her bottom and then her feets. What I saw was unbelievable. A cold chill ran down my back.
Her feets were turned backwards. My throats became dry. I wanted to scream but no voice came out. I turned back and started running and didn't stop till I my reach hostel room. I didn't told anyone what I saw the other day. Months went by but I couldn't forget that incident. Was it something Supernatural I witnessed that day. I started spending more time in library to forget that incident, reading more journals and research papers. One day in a journal I came across a term called Ehlor Danlos yndrome in which joints become hyperflexible. I found it a fascinating topic. I even discussed it with my biology teacher and he told me that it is possible. He even told me about a guy named Maxwell Dey who created a world record of turning his feets backward. There are many people born with different kind of birth defects, different kind of syndromes. Maybe Lakshmi could be one of them, I thought. I started feeling sorry for my behavior that day. I started reading more and more about different kind of cases around the world. Then one day I decided to pay Lakshmi a visit. Maybe I could help her with this trauma. Not financially I could do something for her as of now but maybe I could support her emotionally.
With these thoughts I went to meet her one evening. The sun is about to set, the sky is looking more orange than blue, I reached the servant quaters where I luckily found Sumitra auntie washing dishes near the handpump. I at first felt a bit embarrassed to ask about her daughter but somehow gathered courage and did so. She replied, "She is playing in the verandah". I turned my head towards the verandah and saw a 5-6 year old girl playing. I then enquired about her elder daughter to which she replied she is my only daughter.
"Which girl are you talking about", she asked. "This is an all boys school and there is no girl in the campus .... No other servants have a daughter here, I know each of them personally ". She told me. I was shocked at this statement of hers.....I could not understand what was happening to me. I couldn't believe my ears. With whom I have been talking for months. My throat suddenly became dry, my leg started trembling, I started walking fast,as fast as I could towards my dormitory. I then heard a hissing voice from behind...."Abhi...Abhi...I'm waiting for you, waiting for you in another world". I could hear my heartbeat, a heartbeat as fast as it had never been.... loud , thumping. I started running and never looked back and ran and ran and ran.....
