THE UNIVERSE FAR AWAY!
In 2022, Annie was listening to "Midnight City" by M83, blaring through her wired earphones at full volume. For the past two years, this song was all she listened to, a bittersweet reminder of her father, whom she lost in 2020. The year the world stood still, gripped by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Many lost loved ones, but Annie never imagined she’d lose her father too. Losing someone always hurt her deeply, but no one ever truly prepares for the loss of a parent. It’s a burden that remains—a weight a child never fully escapes. Each year, Annie would find herself feeling helpless, consumed by the loss.
As the music played, thoughts of her father consumed her. What if she could meet him in another universe? What if time travel could change the past and bring him back?
Her mother interrupted her thoughts. "Annie, can you help me with something?" she called. Annie got up and, still lost in thought, asked her, "Ma, if you could meet Dad again, would you travel to another universe to see him?"
Without hesitation, her mother responded, "Yes. If it were possible, I would never let him go."
That night, Annie couldn’t stop thinking: would she choose to meet her father in another universe, or would she travel back in time to save him?
The next morning, Annie woke up with a throbbing headache. She noticed her phone had died, and as she searched for her charger, something seemed off. Her room felt different—dark, rusty, unfamiliar. “What happened to my room?” she thought, confused.
“Annie... Annie... are you awake?” a familiar voice called. Annie stepped outside but found herself in what looked like a dungeon, not her home.
"Who is this woman?" Annie wondered.
“Annie, we have to go! He’s coming for us,” the woman urged.
"Who are you? And who is coming for us?" Annie asked, frightened.
“You don’t recognize me? Oh god... I’m you, Annie, from the future!”
“What? My future self?”
“Yes! I’m you from 2050.”
“How is this even possible? Where am I? What year is this?”
“It’s 2050,” the woman said.
Annie couldn’t believe it—2050? Her mind raced with questions. This wasn’t her home. The outside world looked dark and ominous. And who was coming?
“We need to run! He’s coming. He’ll kill us both. Let’s go!” her future self-urged.
Annie grabbed her hand, her heart pounding as they ran through eerie streets, feeling as though something was chasing them.
“Where are we going? Who’s after us?” Annie asked.
“We’re going to save our father. The monster is going to kill him.”
“Our father? But... he died in 2020!” Annie stammered.
“In your world, yes. But in this universe, he’s still alive. This is our only chance to save him. And you have the power to do it.”
“What do you mean by ‘your world’? What world is this?” Annie’s fear was mounting.
“This is a parallel universe, Annie. Everything here is opposite to your world. The choices you made there don’t apply here. All other choices you could have made exist in another dimension. But I’ll explain everything later. We’re here... Nooooo!”
Annie looked ahead, her breath catching. A giant monster stood in front of them, holding a man by the neck.
“DADDY!!!” the future Annie screamed.
Annie’s eyes welled with tears. It was him—her father. The father she had lost so suddenly. The father she never got to say goodbye to. Is this her last chance to save him?
“Use your powers, Annie!” her future self-urged.
“What powers? How do I save him?” Annie cried.
“Focus. The power is within you—you just need to imagine it in your mind.”
Suddenly, her phone, though dead, began playing "Midnight City." As the music surged through her, Annie felt something stirring within her body. Her palms began to itch, her skin tingled.
“What’s happening to me?” she thought.
Annie extended her palm, and to her shock, a nearby chair flew across the room. She moved her finger, and the table shifted from right to left. The monster noticed her.
“Oh, look who’s here. Annie, the girl with powers. Are you going to try and kill me? Ha! I killed your father in your world, and now it’s time to do it here too. Are you going to cry, Annie? Your pain brings me such joy!” the monster taunted.
Fury welled up inside her. Annie imagined the monster’s neck in her grasp and began to squeeze. The monster cried out in pain. “It’s working,” she thought.
“I won’t let you kill him!” Annie shouted.
She raised her hands and sent the monster flying toward the ceiling. At that moment, her future self-threw her a lighter. With the fire source in her hand, Annie felt a surge of power unlike anything before. She knew what she had to do, sacrifice herself to destroy the monster.
Annie ignited herself, her body engulfed in flames. All she needed to do was touch the monster, and it would burn to ashes. She lunged forward, and with a final, fiery touch, the monster was reduced to nothing. But as the monster perished, Annie collapsed to the ground, weak and exhausted.
“What’s happening to me? Why do I feel so weak?” she wondered.
“Your purpose has been fulfilled,” a familiar voice said.
Annie looked up. There, standing before her, was her father. She could hardly believe her eyes.
“Daddy?” she whispered, tears streaming down her face. The grief she had buried for so long suddenly overwhelmed her.
“Why did you have to leave so soon? I never got to say goodbye,” she sobbed.
Her father gently stroked her head, comforting her. Annie wrapped her arms around him, crying for what felt like hours. “I’d give anything to have you back, Daddy. I’d sacrifice my life if it meant you could stay.”
Her father smiled. “Annie, my time in your world was destined to end. But I’m always with you, my dear. I visit you sometimes. I love you, even if I didn’t always show it.”
He placed something in her hand, a small clock with his name engraved on it.
“This will remind you that I’m always by your side,” he said.
Just then, her future self-spoke again. “It’s time for you to go, Annie.”
“No! I can’t leave Daddy!” she cried.
Her father hugged her tightly. “You saved me, Annie. Now save yourself. Live your life and experience the happiness that awaits you. I’ll always be with you.”
Knock Knock.
Annie jolted awake. Was it all a dream?
“Who is it?” she called.
“It’s your mother. Time to get ready for work,” her mother replied.
Annie blinked in confusion. Was it really just a dream? She glanced around her room—it was 2022. But something caught her eye on the table. It was the clock her father had given her.
Annie fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face. It hadn’t been a dream after all. She had truly met her father and saved him in another universe. The grief and helplessness she had carried for so long rushed back. But this time, she knew—she had saved him, if not in this world, then in another.
“I saved him. I really did save Daddy,” she whispered.
And with that, Annie found a small piece of peace amidst the sorrow.
