THE PROMISE
Life is miserable. It is unpredictable. And the lessons that we learn throughout our life are the best lessons we can get in our entire life. Every chapter is hard. But there is something we cannot ignore, and that is, we cannot escape from these chapters. And I always say that “Life has got the best syllabus that no other book or courses can give, all the chapters and the lessons that we learn will always be in our memory and stay close to our heart”! There is a reason behind why I wrote this because today I am going to share a story about a girl who has gone through a lot in her life. She has gone through things which cannot be expressed through words, but it is my responsibility to share her story through my words, because yes, she too deserves all the love! And her story deserves to be heard by each one of you reading this. If you ask me if I am happy writing this, I have got two answers. The first one is that I am happy because I could share her story with the world, and the 2nd one is that my heart skips a beat when I think about her because I know the things she has gone through and how much courage she had to put in just in order to breathe!
Mystery Island! Doesn’t this name hold a lot of mystery in it? Just like the name, this island holds a lot of mysteries that are still uncovered. But Nayana’s story was never a mystery on that island. All the people who lived there knew her story, but sadly, she was judged, she was seen as a victim who lost all her dignity, she was misunderstood and she was seen as untouchable.
Nayana came from a family where everyone had a conservative conviction. Her life was at risk the moment she was in her mother’s womb. Before I tell you anything about Nayana, you should first know about Kamala, her mother. Kamala was very kind and lovely. She was forced to marry her father, Aviraj. I should speak honestly, so I am telling you that Aviraj never loved Kamala. It was a forced marriage and Kamala had to go through a lot of abuse from her husband and in-laws. He was never happy with his wife. He found a lot of ways to kill Kamala, but somehow she survived. But however she survived, her survival was not for good in that house. When Kamala was pregnant, Aviraj tried a lot of ways to kill the baby, because he was not ready to become a father as well as to take up the responsibility and, above everything, he never loved his family. He has tried to kick her womb, give her the wrong medication, beat her, kick her from the back and, what not, has he not done to kill the poor baby and the mother. Kamala was tired of him, but her family never accepted her back because of their pride. And they believed that no women should come back to their home once they get married. Kamala had gone through all the pain and still kept her baby safe. One day, Aviraj told her to kill the baby because he didn’t want a child. Kamala was sure that he would kill her baby if she stayed with him, so she decided to leave the house. On one night when everyone was asleep, she left her home for her child’s better future, but before she left, she took a photograph with her of her and her husband. She walked and walked for long hours with that photograph, not knowing where she was going. She walked forward hoping to see some place where she could hide with her baby in her womb. She was tired, her body was in pain, she was sweating, she was stressed, and she couldn’t handle her belly weight with that much tiredness, but still she kept walking. By the end of the night and early in the morning, she saw a nameboard on which a name was written called ‘Mystery Island’ and she saw a boat that was taking people to the Island and from the island. She didn’t know what place it was, but she was sure that she would be safe there and no one would find her or her baby on that island. She jumped onto the boat and as the boat floated towards the island, she picturized a beautiful life with her baby. She felt some comfort and fulfillment because she realised that she had escaped from the monster. Interestingly, neither her family nor her husband and his family looked out for Kamala. Maybe they always wanted her to leave their life, or maybe she was always a burden!
After one hour, the boat reached the island and that is when she got some sense of peace. Not knowing about the people, their lifestyle and their character, she walked onto the island. And not surprisingly, everyone was staring at her and her womb. I am a woman and I know how uncomfortable it is to see some men looking at us inappropriately, but sadly, Nayana’s mother, who was just about to become a mother, also had to go through those stares. She was tired and needed some rest. She didn’t see any place to go, so she sat beneath a tree. She was thirsty and hungry. It was a hot sunny day. Her eyes were dull, her body full of sweat, her mouth dried up and her heart pounding. She didn’t even have the energy to ask for some food. Slowly she fell unconscious. After some time, when she opened her eyes, she saw that she was lying on a bed. There was a good breeze which gave her some comfort. Suddenly, she heard someone calling her, “beta”, which in Hindi means ‘child’. When she looked, she saw an old lady walking towards her with a plate full of food and a glass full of water. She seemed like an angel to Kamala. She came closer to her with a beautiful smile. Slowly she helped her to get up and have the food. Kamala asked her whom she was and why she had been taken to the old lady’s house, so the old lady replied by asking her to call her Naani, and told her that she saw her lying under the tree and realised that she was pregnant, she was also a mother and wanted to help Kamala, so she called some people she trusted and helped her to take Kamala to her home. Naani’s house was made of dry grass. There was no room but only a living area which was filled with woods and logs. It was like a hut which was far away inside the woods, and she was living alone there. After having the food, Naani asked her to trust her and asked Kamala why she came to this island, so Kamala narrated her story to Naani. After listening to her story, Naani was distressed and ensured that she would take care of Kamala till her death. From that day, she was taken care of by Naani and Kamala received all the love from her which had been missing in her life for a long time. Naani took care of her like her own child because Naani’s children left her at her old age. Both kamala and Naani had a huge vacuum in their lives which was filled with love for both of them. Naani’s kindness and maternal instincts were a balm to Kamala’s weary soul and Kamala’s daughterly love was a peace to Naani in her last days of life. But one thing that we have to notice is that she never allowed Kamala to leave her house as she didn’t want anyone to harm her. Whenever Kamala used to open the door, Naani used to resist it. Kamala asked her about why she was not letting her go out but Naani never replied. She promised to keep her safe and told her that she could take a walk outside the home only after she gave birth. Kamala never understood why Naani did that until after a few months.
And after a long wait, finally the day came when her labour pain started. Naani stood by her all the time and helped her deliver the baby. It was tough for Kamala as she lacked medicine and as she had gone through abuse and physical injuries. There were a lot of complications but Naani herself managed it. And she delivered a healthy baby and Naani immediately called her ‘Nayana’. Nayana is the name of a Goddess, which means ‘beautiful eyed’. And in the same way, she had beautiful eyes. She was very beautiful and both Naani and Kamala were happy. They started a new journey and Kamala slowly healed all her wounds. Naani took care of Nayana and Kamala, fed them, loved them and, above everything, gave shelter for them to live peacefully for the rest of their lives. And after a long time, Naani allowed Kamala to get out of the house and to take a walk. This time Kamala was taken out by Naani as she always wanted to ensure that both the baby and Kamala were safe. And as she expected, everyone was staring at them. Some were angry and some were looking at them with disgust. Kamala never understood why they were looking in that way, she felt uncomfortable, and she went back home. Kamala asked Naani about what she saw. This time Naani was ready to tell her why she kept her safe in her house. Naani told her that, “Mystery Island holds a tradition where they kill women carrying a baby who comes from another place. There are two types of people on this island, one is the wealthy one and the others are people like us who are not wealthy. The island is very small and there are only a few people who live here, but still there are a few of them who still turn out to be devils. They kill the pregnant women, saying that they will be a curse to the island, which most of the people believe. But only a few of them understand that a mother is always equivalent to God. I had to keep you safe from those monsters because I didn’t want to lose you and the baby. I cannot say that you are safe right now, but I can assure you that you will be safe around me till my death”. And this was the mystery that the island held. After listening to this, Kamala was shocked. She realised that she had escaped from a monster only to reach a monster island, but it was Naani who protected and saved her. Nayana grew up in Naani’s house and soon Kamala and Nayana became Naani’s family. Her childhood days were her best days.
Years passed and Nayana grew up. For anyone to go to school, they had to go to the town by taking a boat. Even though they were not financially stable, Kamala and Naani together sent her to school working day and night in the woods. Nayana used to spend most of the time with her Naani after coming back from school. She used to recite stories to her and used to play with her. Nayana never knew her mother’s past. Naani never bothered to tell her about the same. But Kamala strongly believed that her daughter needed to know everything that had happened. All these years, Nayana asked them about her father, but they didn’t reply to her. Naani and Kamala together celebrated Nayana’s birthday every year with whatever they had. They made sure that Nayana was happy and that she led a peaceful and energetic life. Years flew by and when it was Nayanas 17th birthday, Kamala knew that she was matured enough to understand her mother’s story. Naani was too old by then, and she was bedridden. Kamala took care of the family on her own. After 17 years of living on mystery island, she finally told her daughter about everything that had happened. Nayana was shocked, she stood quiet, she was numb, there was a strong wind which added an extra shock to the whole scene. Kamala was crying and Nayana didn’t know what to do. She was upset and terrified. Kamala took the photograph that she carried when she came to the mystery island 17 years back and gave it to her daughter. Nayana looked at it for once and as she looked at the picture, tears started rolling from her eyes, she was weeping, she completely broke down. She held the picture close to her heart and sat down. She cried and cried, and her face puffed up due to the tears she was shedding. Kamala knew that Nayana needed some space, and she let her leave alone for some time. The whole day Nayana was thinking about what her mother told her and how much her mother had struggled to give a good life to her. She formed a hate towards her father, but she made it to the point in her mind that she would meet her father some day before she dies. She wanted to take revenge in her mind and she wanted to give a good happy life to both Naani and her mother. She went to Naani’s room and Naani already knew that Nayana knew her mother’s story. She called her to sit beside her, her frail hand grasped Nayans hand. Nayana could feel the softness of Naanis blanket. She smiled at Nayana and told her, “My child, take good care of your mother, she has suffered a lot, and she deserves to stay happy in this small world. I have made sure to take care of you and your mother all these years, but now the time has come for me to leave this world. I lacked the love of my children and grandchildren, but it is you both who filled those vacuums. Now I can die peacefully, but before that, promise me that you will become successful one day and take good care of your mother and give her the best life. Also, promise me that you will meet your father one day after you become successful. My soul will rest in peace if you do so. Do it for your Naani”! Nayana didn’t take even a second to reply and promised her that she would do everything her Naani had told her. She hugged her Naani, tears shed drop by drop. Naani patted Nayana, which gave her some comfort and she smiled. She went back to Kamala and hugged her, and she said, “Don’t worry Amma, I’ll take care of you”. Her words gave Kamala immense happiness, and she felt a sense of peace. She felt confident because she knew that Nayana would take care of everything. Nayana studied hard and scored good marks in all her exams. She used to do that since she was a child but scored even more marks after knowing the whole story. She helped her mother with all the work after coming back from school and took good care of Naani. Nayana had a difficult life outside her home due to societal norms, but she never took it in her mind because she knew that she had to lead a good life in order to give her mother and Naani the best life. Everything was unfolding in a beautiful way until a disaster happened which completely changed Nayanas life.
One day when Nayana was at school in the town, a huge disaster happened on the mystery island. Due to heavy rain, a huge part of the mystery island was taken away by the water within a few hours. Even though they stayed inside the woods, the flood was so huge and immense that Naani and her mother were taken away by the flood. Nayana didn’t know about this incident. After school got over, she waited for longer hours than usual for the boat to arrive. This raised a lot of questions in her mind. She was scared and anticipated. The boat arrived, and so there were lots of people on it. The helmsman looked worried and people were crying. Since people used to look at her with disgust, nobody cared to inform her about what happened there. Everyone pushed her away and ran to the town with her life after getting out of the boat. The Helmsman asked her if she wanted to go to the island, and she looked at him with a look that raised a lot of questions, but she never bothered to ask him. Instead, she replied that she wanted to go to the other side. While she was on the boat, she saw the island was not looking like it used to look, and she could hear people crying. Her heartbeat rose, she was sweating, her foot was shivering and when she reached the island she couldn’t find one whole part of the island. She ran here and there looking for her Naani and mother, but she couldn’t find them. Nobody cared to help her as they were all looking for their own safety and nobody liked her and her family. There were many good people around her house, but none were found. Out of nervousness, she went to an old man and asked him what had happened and where her family was. He looked at her angrily, shouted at her and said, “you and your mother were a curse to this island. Whatever your mother has done was not for good, and we all believe that it was you both who bought the disaster along with you and, as a result, the island that remained peaceful all these years has been drowned by a huge flood. It took away a lot of people, including your mother and your Naani. Nobody deserved this tragic experience except your mother, who was a curse, and your Naani, who sinned to keep your mother safe from us while she was carrying you. And now you are the only one who is remaining, and soon we will take you off of this island because we do not want another disaster to happen anymore”! Clouds were dark, there were high waves, thunder and lightning distressed her. She stood there without saying a single word. She didn’t cry that day. She stood there with numbness for a long time. She stood there for hours and rain started pouring. And it was at that time she gained her consciousness back. When she got back to her consciousness, she screamed, saying, “Maa” and she cried. She didn’t see her loved ones for the last time. She cried so deeply that it felt like her heart would stop at any time. She remembered all the good times she had with her Naani and mother, but sadly they were no longer with her. She could not bear this realisation. She wanted to end her life, but she was scared. She sat under the same tree her mother sat 17 years back, helpless and hopeless with no life, just like her mother who felt the same emotion 17 years back. She didn’t sleep that night. She couldn’t process what was happening. She cried, screamed, pulled her hair, tried to harm herself, scratched her body to increase the pain, pinched herself, but at the end she hugged herself and cried. She had no place to go, no one to take care of her. It is that point she remembered about her father. She had the photograph her mother gave her in her school bag. Immediately she got up and searched for her bag. She found it all wet. She immediately opened it and took out the photo. It was her parent’s marriage photo. She looked at her mother and cried. Her heart ached, she was shivering because she had been wet since evening, her eyes didn’t get much sight due to tears being filled. But she knew that she wouldn’t have a life on that island anymore. So, she decided to leave the island the next morning. She saw the sun rising after a huge storm. People woke up early that morning and they saw her sitting under the tree. A few people gathered and started throwing stones at her. They told her to leave the island. She was already in pain, she got scared. She tried to get up but fell down. She was covered with curses and wounds. She pleaded in front of them asking them to stop throwing stones. But those people were too rude and continued throwing stones. With all her energy, she got up and ran away with her bag. She saw a boat coming onto the island. People were chasing her to kill her, but she jumped to get onto the boat before they caught her. Helmsman was kind to her from the moment he met her mother. He knew that something was crucial in their lives, so he helped her to escape. He didn’t utter a word. But in his mind, from the bottom of his heart, he prayed to God to help her and save her from those monsters by sailing the boat faster. 17 years back, her mother took the same boat with the same Helmsman on it to reach the island to save her and her daughter’s life and this time her daughter took the same boat with the same helmsman on it to reach the other side and to save her life from the monsters that lived on the island. How unpredictable our life is, right?
After a few hours, she reached the town. She didn’t know where to go, what to do or why she was even existing. Tears filled in her eyes, she held her bag close to her heart because that was her 1st gift from her, Naani and her mother. She sat down in front of a store waiting for someone to arrive. After a few hours, the owner of the store, Raghav, came and saw her sitting over there. He was confused but asked her why she was sitting in front of his store. She was tired, wounded, crying and she was wearing an old uniform. She asked him if she could trust him. He looked at her with kindness and told her that he had a daughter of the same age, and she could trust him. She trusted him and told him whatever had happened. She was not able to talk properly. She was shivering, her mouth was dried up, and she couldn’t see properly because of the tears. Raghav listened to her patiently. He comforted her and gave her food and water and asked her to take some rest. He took her to a room where there was a bed. She laid down and hugged her bag. When she hugged her bag, she felt like she was hugging her mother and Naani. She was tired of crying. Slowly she fell asleep. Raghav came and checked upon her. She was in a deep sleep. He wanted to help her, so he decided to ask her what she needed. Nayana woke up after some time. She went to Raghav. He smiled at her but when she saw a lot of people around him, she got scared. At that time, she realised that she had developed a trauma. Raghav told her not to worry and to come closer. He patted her head with love and fondness. It reminded her of her Naani, which put tears in her eyes. Raghav asked her if she needed any help. She didn’t get an answer at that time. Raghav understood her silence and gave her time. Until her reply, he took care of her. Every day and night she didn’t have any energy or courage to move forward. She questioned her existence many times. She was losing control. She wanted to meet her father, but she knew that he would kick her off if she went to him in that condition. And one day, while she was sitting in a corner remembering about all the lovely moments she had with her mother and Naani, she suddenly remembered Naani’s words. She knew that her mother was not there with her anymore but, however, she had promised her Naani that she would become successful one day. Her words repeated in her ears over time. She was confused whether to take a stand or not, but she remembered the things the people from the island said about her, her mother and Naani. And that gave her strength to not just get up but to wake up. Her promise to Naani woke her up and she was filled with revenge and courage! She immediately went to Raghav who was busy with his work and told him to “help me to become successful”. Raghav was shocked to see a shift in her character. She sounded bold, her eyes were not dull this time, they were filled with confidence, power and boldness. He could see the determination in her eyes, so he asked her how he could help her. She replied by saying that, “you don’t have to give me free food and money, instead I’ll do whatever job you give me, and you just have to pay for my work. I’ll continue my studies with that money. I don’t want sympathy, but all I want is a job right now to take care of my life”. Raghav saw an unusual power in her words. He promised to help her. He gave her some store work that needed less effort and told her that he would pay her for her work. Nayana took back control of her life. She was willing to live for her mother and Naani and to prove to them that she would never give up.
Her journey continued. Her sorrows were never erased. The vacuum she had in her life was never filled. She knew it was going to be hard, but she didn’t stop. She went to school, came back to the store and did her work. After finishing her work, she was immersed in her studies. She used to get paid for her work. And with that money she paid her school fees. Months passed by, Nayana continued her fight and she passed out from her school as a topper. Even though she was a topper, she was not happy because her family was no longer with her. But Raghav was very proud of her and decided to celebrate her success. He bought a cake and a gift, and called his family to celebrate. For the 1st time in her life, Nayana saw a few people who were kind to her. When she saw the arrangements, tears started rolling from her eyes. She remembered her Naani and mother. She wished they were there, but unfortunately her wish couldn’t be fulfilled. But I strongly believe that her Naani’s and mother’s blessings would always be there with her. And maybe those blessings would have been the fuel to her limitless fights and courage.
She continued her fight, she worked, she went to college. She didn’t make any friends because she trusted none! She was reluctant to have any relationships. Raghav was always proud of her, and he knew that one day she would make history. He supported her throughout her journey. She used to work with a lot of co-workers. Her struggles found no limit and one day an incident happened which made her realise how strongly she had emerged from her lowest days. It was the final year of her college. Raghav was out for some extra work. There was only Nayana and one of her co-workers in the store. They were alone. While she was working, he tried to harass her. He slowly grabbed her from the back and touched her inappropriately. She didn’t run away, and she was not scared either. As I said in the beginning, Nayana is the name of the Goddess, a Goddess that has beautiful eyes. But this time the Goddess in her woke up not with beautiful eyes but with fire in her eyes. It was more than she could tolerate. She grabbed one of his hands and chopped it off with the ax that was placed in a corner. She emerged like a fire just like Maa Durga. She didn’t think twice, not even for once. All her anger, her frustration, her trauma was taken out on him, and he got what he deserved. He was in so much pain, but Nayanas anger didn’t end, so she kicked him on his chest and threw him out of the store. People gathered and started criticizing her. Blamed her for what she had done but never understood what she would have gone through. When Raghav came to know about this, he didn’t scold her, instead he appreciated her for her bravery and told her that whatever she did was right. He told her not to worry about the case and problems that would arise, he would handle it. Later, the co-worker was arrested by the police and that made everyone shut their mouths. Nayana was not scared, not even a bit. Throughout these years, she has built a character which can't be destroyed by anyone. She was fearless, faced every situation with boldness and her courage knew no boundaries. She grew up mentally. Even after all these incidents, she used to remember her Naani and mother. Also, she never forgot about her father. She wanted to meet him one day.
Years passed again and Nayana wanted to appear for the civil service examination. After her graduation, she started preparing for her exams. It was not easy for her. Although she had the money that she saved from her daily job, Raghav also helped her with paying her coaching fees. She studied with all her heart and appeared for the exam. But unfortunately, she didn’t clear her prelims. She was devastated. She didn’t lose hope. She tried again. She studied late at night. She concentrated fully on her studies and she didn’t waste even a single second. She used to wake up early in the morning and study for about 20 hrs, which was physically and mentally a torture for her. But even after all these efforts, she didn’t clear her prelims. She was about to give up, but Raghav didn’t allow her to stop. She tried again. On her 3rd attempt, she cleared her prelims. It gave her a sense of joy. But sadly, she was not able to clear her mains. This broke her down. She almost gave up. She cried and asked God why she was being tested like that. She had been going through a lot since childhood. It was too much for her tolerance. But then she remembered her promise to her Naani and the words she said to her mother. She knew that they would be watching her from heaven, and she needed to prove herself to them. Also, she wanted to make a big comeback in order to answer certain questions that were raised about her. With all these thoughts in her mind, she started afresh. She prepared more, found out her weakness. She tried her best to tackle every challenge and guess what! This time she cleared her prelims and the mains. She was happy after a long time, but she doubted her skills in speaking for the interview. She prepared for it very well. She did some mock interviews and the day finally came when she had to face the interview. She was nervous and the panel of judges noticed it. They asked her why she was nervous, so she answered, “this is my first time giving an interview sir”. They cooled her down and started questioning her. She answered everything beautifully. She never expected herself to answer with that much grace, but I truly believe that she answered all the questions with a lot of confidence was partly because of her lost Naani and mother’s blessings. By the end of the interview, one of the interviewers looked at her and smiled and said, “you have a long way to go, brave girl. One day you will rule this world”. Those words struck her thought. She was not sure about her selection. But she was fulfilled because of an extraordinary performance. After a few months, the result came. She was nervous. Raghav was nervous too. She took her old bag and held it closer. She told herself that "whatever the result is, I am going to look at it with full confidence". She opened her laptop, searched for her name. While the site was loading, she closed her eyes and thought about Naani, her mother and this time about Raghav too. When she opened her eyes, she saw her roll no. written, her name and in the next column it was written as rank 1 and service – IAS. She didn’t believe her eyes. She searched again and again, but happily the result was the same! After 6 long years, she screamed out of joy. Tears filled her eyes but this time it was tears of happiness. She couldn’t control her happiness. She ran towards Raghav and jumped onto him and hugged him. She creamed saying, “I did it paapa, I did it! I became an IAS officer”. Raghav was shocked, surprised and happy because of two things. One was because she called him Paapa after these 6 long years and the other one was because he was able to help her achieve her goal he promised her 6 years back. He looked at her, held her closer and kissed her forehead. And he said, “I am proud of you my beta”! She remembered her Naani and screamed, saying, “I did it, Maa, I did it Naani” and she cried. Raghav remembered the day he met her for the 1st time. That day she was hopeless, lost and broken, but now when he looked at her, she was full of life, she was an IAS officer and, above everything, she had got enormous power. He was happy for her.
After 2 years of coaching and preparation, she finally got on to her duty as an officer. But there was one more promise that was to be fulfilled. It was to meet her father. But before that, after 8 years, she went back to the mystery island to meet the people who threw stones at her and cursed her. She took the boat and, surprisingly, it was the same helmsman. He recognised her because her entry as an officer was streamed on the news and on social media. He called her, “ma’am” respectfully. She looked at him and smiled. In her heart she was always thankful to him. After a few hours, she reached the island. People started looking at her, but not with disgust but with fear in their eyes. She smiled with pride and said, “I know you people remember me, you people cursed me and my mother for something we have not done. Even when the disaster happened you threw stones at me to leave the island. I am not here to stay here anymore, but I came here to make you people realise that neither me nor my mother were a curse on this island. The real curse is monsters like you. I am not here to charge any case either, but tell you that, karma will soon hit you back and you people will not bear the loss”. Everyone was scared. But she smiled and looked at the sky. She felt the presence of her Naani and her mother. On the way back to the town she remembered her journey on the boat 8 years ago. exactly 8 years ago, she went to the town with no hope left and with a broken heart. But this time she went to the town with a heart full of gratitude and a mind full of power. Her next mission was to find her father. It took her a long 8 months to find her father. He was in a place far away from the town. He was suffering from cancer and it was his last stage. For the first time in Nayanas life, she met her biological father. When he saw her, he recognised her because she had a lot of his genes. Tears rolled from his eyes. When Nayana was 17 years old, she had a heart full of revenge, but when she saw her father, her heart melted. She called her, “baapa”. He tried to get up and hug her, but his body didn’t allow him to do so. She went towards him and hugged him. He asked her about Kamala. She told him that she was no more. Aviraj was broke. Nayana told him everything that happened. He was shocked but proud. He said, “I never wanted you, I have tried to kill you and your mother, but karma hit me so hard that the child I tried to kill is now sitting in front of me and is taking care of me. I found some comfort and love in your hug, thank you”! Nayana didn’t want to leave him alone, so she took him along with her. She looked at the sky and smiled.
