Time and Tide
His eyes widened as he stepped back and surveyed his masterpiece. Ten years of sweat and resolve consolidated into a single contraption- The Time Machine.
Oh, the things he could do! Save countless lives, manipulate infinite timelines and alter millions of destinies.
The first one he was going to transform, was his.
10th December, 2014
“Is the milkshake okay?”, he asked, anxiously awaiting her reaction. She grinned. “It’s great! Thank you for going all the way to the car to get it for me.” He laughed. As if he wouldn’t make the world turn the other way round if she said that she liked it better that way.
They settled down on the beach, taking in the majestic ocean before them. She cocked her head to one side. “Can you hear that?”
He shrugged and pulled her close to his side, resting his head on her shoulder as he marvelled, once again, at how perfect his life was at this very moment.
Upon her insistence, he raised his head, and vaguely heard something resembling an announcement. “I think they’re saying something about a high tide? I’m not sure. Wait here, I’ll find out and get back.”
She nodded, and he stood up and walked. As he did, he noticed that the beach was suspiciously empty, but didn’t think much of it. They were in a fairly secluded stretch of the beach, after all.
He scaled a considerable distance, and yet, not a single person in sight. Suddenly, a man wearing a lifeguard’s vest ran frantically towards him and yelled, “What are you still doing here? Didn’t you hear the announcement? There is a tsunami warning- everyone must evacuate immediately. Is there anyone else with you?”
He felt his heart twist. “Yes, my wife, I- I’ll just run back and get her.”
“Ok, but you’ll have to hurry. You don’t have much time.”
His legs felt like stone as he ran back as fast as his spirit would allow. He could see her as a tiny dot in the distance, she had gotten up, perhaps sensing the alarmingly rising tide, and was nervously edging backwards.
He gathered all of his strength to call out her name as loud as possible, and just as he parted his lips, in what seemed like a blink of an eye and a million years at once, the tide rose to a formidable height, swallowing her whole as she ran backwards.
He sank to his knees as the wave crashed against her and she screamed in shock, desperately fighting against the current as it swept her away, disappearing into the blue darkness, while he remained frozen, watching.
Today
He took a deep breath and double checked all the controls before settling himself into the seat of the time machine. He reached for the display screen to input the most fateful day of his life. 10th December, 2014.
As the machine whirred and transported him through the abyss of time, he could feel his heart beating against his ribs, the anticipation driving him insane. This was it. He would remedy his most fatal error, that cost the most beautiful woman her life, and forever ruined his.
The machine jerked to a stop and he almost tripped over himself as he hurriedly scrambled out of it. He flicked the switch at the front, shrinking it to the size of a button that he secured in his chest pocket.
He looked ahead, he could see her sitting down, just as he remembered. Hope filled his chest. The tide had not risen yet, and he was closer to her than he was that day, running with new vigour towards her.
As he neared her, he caught his breath and reached out to touch her. His arm reached her shoulder- and then went right through her, much like a ghost. He looked down at his arms in panic, and then the rest of his body. He had gone wrong somewhere, how could he miss this? He travelled through time just as he had wanted, but not as a physically solid object.
He didn’t have time to comprehend why, he realised. All that mattered was he had to get her attention. So he screamed her name, over and over again. She didn’t turn back, didn’t even flinch. That’s when he knew. He had failed.
He closed his eyes. “It’s fine,” he told himself, “I’ll just return, rework, fix these issues, and try again. I’ve waited ten years. I can wait more.”
He walked back and tried to ignore the fact that he would be witnessing her death for the second time, tuning out his senses.
Abruptly, he heard a crack below him and opened his eyes, fearing the worst. He looked down in growing dread, to find the broken button lying at his feet.
That’s when he heard it again. The tide.
He turned around and sank to his knees as the wave crashed against her and she screamed in shock, desperately fighting against the current as it swept her away, disappearing into the blue darkness, while he remained frozen, watching.
As the tide subsided, he drew in a shattered breath and swallowed. He had no idea what would happen now.
The button vibrated. In a flash, the waves crashed back down, and the timeline reset.
She was back at her position, sitting at the edge of the shore, milkshake in hand, waiting for her husband to return.
His heart sank in horror as he realised what he had done. He was stuck. In one single moment, forever. Forced to relive the very memory he dreaded.
The tide rose. She got up.
He sank to his knees as the wave crashed against her and she screamed in shock, desperately fighting against the current as it swept her away, disappearing into the blue darkness, while he remained frozen, watching.
Again, and again, and again. For all time.
