Flutters of green or tangerine
Deck the Halls with splendour
Outliers deemed obscene
Hence we awe at the vapid grandeur

Beat your chest with flair
Bow to the fait accompli
Ah! You're in Jingoism's lair
Quandary questions quashed nonchalantly

Blares of boastful horns
Drown the pleading throngs
Shushed are peaceful songs-by
Blares of boastful horns

Scathing blade, pillar of stability
Sheathed in crisp paper green
Screaming praise, no credibility
Shuffling tales under your screen

Divisive narrative adorn walls of celluloid
Hateful rhetoric draws the feet
Dutt's inspired Ray of cinema seemingly void
Simmering dissent that ceased to seethe

Blares of boastful horns
Kill the doubtful scorns
Hubris laden velvety thorns-are
Blares of boastful horns

This poem is a critique on the socio-political environment of today. For this final round i shall be dissecting each and every concept touched upon in this poem.

Green (Hara) and Tangerine (Bhagwa) are colours of the Muslim and Hindu community respectively, with each faction flaunting them in each rally, celebration and campaigns they conduct. The very first two lines explain how the grandeur of these religiously driven campaigns overshadow the national sentiment of unity and that anyone who does not follow suit is ostracised and ridiculed, forcing everyone to appreciate.

The second stanza expands on the action one is required to do in this new society, and that is to inflate every achievement and replace patriotism with jingoism. Fait accompli is something that one must adhere to without question and that is something that is being propagated in this current situation. The last line uses alliteration to emphasise that any doubts or dilemmas are suffocated swiftly.

The third stanza focuses on how the chest-thumping of our inflated achievements drown the real issues that are often highlighted by massive protests but soon forgotten due to a lack of attention from the media.

The fourth stanza now shifts focus to the media, dubbed as the fourth pillar of democracy, now having lost all its power. The blade of the media that cut through any misinformation and spread awareness amongst the public is now non-existent, due to money and influence playing their part in curbing its incisiveness. The focus on ratings rather than the quality of the news has forced the media to simply sing praises of the ruling regime and alter stories and events to fit their biases. This paragraph deploys the anaphora poetic device.

Cinema, which has historically been a reflection of the struggles of the common man, has also fallen prey to pandering the regressiveness of the people. This is talked about in the fifth stanza, through the mention of ‘walls of celluloid’. Dutt here refers to Guru Dutt and Ray refers to both a sun-ray and Satyajit Ray. it’s a double entendre and somewhat of a transferred epithet. Consonance can be observed in the last line.

The last stanza is a repetition of the third stanza denoting how the problems persist even after a long period of time. ‘Velvety thorns’ is an oxymoron used to describe the ‘boastful horns’ as they are hiding all the faults and inadequacies, however this also leads to unresolved issues blowing into major crises.
