TRUST

It was an important day for Raghavendra Shastri. His son, Vikram, had secured a merit seat in medical school, and today was the last day to pay the college fees. Shastri, the priest at the local Amman temple, was a man of strict principles, ensuring no mistakes were ever made in the service of the goddess. His lifelong dream was to see his only son become a doctor. Vikram had understood his father's struggles and worked hard, topping the district. The pride in his father's eyes during the results announcement was a moment Vikram cherished.

At 4 AM, Shastri completed the first ritual of the day at the temple, offering kumkum abhishekam to the goddess. He instructed his assistant to take care of things while he left for home. Today was special; he had to pick up Vikram and head to the college to pay the fees. His heart swelled with joy and pride. As he pedaled his cycle through the quiet streets, his mind imagined his son in a white doctor’s coat, a stethoscope hanging around his neck. Tears blurred his vision as he pictured Vikram walking confidently, a doctor who would make their small town proud.

But in the blink of an eye, Shastri’s world shifted.

A speeding truck screeched past him, hitting a young man on a bike. The impact sent the boy flying through the air, landing just a few feet in front of Shastri. Time seemed to slow down. The boy hit the ground with a sickening thud, blood pooling around him as he gasped for life.

Shastri, frozen by the horrifying sight, stood gripping the handlebars of his cycle. He had just offered kumkum abhishekam to the goddess. His breath caught in his chest as the boy's eyes met his, filled with fear and begging for help. The street was empty, no one else in sight.

At that moment, a man with a tricycle came and said, "We need to get him to the hospital," pulling Shastri out of his shock.

Together, they lifted the boy onto the tricycle and rushed him to the nearby hospital. Shastri’s mind raced; he couldn’t shake the image of the boy's pleading eyes. The boy was barely conscious when they arrived, his condition worsening by the second.

"We'll start treatment only if you deposit two lakhs," the hospital administration said firmly, glancing at the boy, then back at Shastri. The words struck Shastri like a blow.

The boy lay there, his life slipping away. Shastri's heart pounded. Without hesitation, he pulled out his debit card. His hands trembled as he held it, knowing what was at stake. All his life savings, including the money for Vikram’s college fees, were in that account. His mind flashed to the image of Vikram in a doctor's coat. How would he tell his son that the money was gone? Would his son understand?

For a moment, doubt crept in. “How will you pay your son’s college fees?” the question echoed in his mind. The weight of both lives hung in the balance.

But then, his faith took over. Shastri looked at the boy again, struggling for every breath. The right thing to do was clear. His hand steadied, and he handed over the card.

As the payment processed, he felt a strange calm. He had done the right thing. He didn’t know how he would explain this to Vikram or how they would manage the fees, but he knew in his heart that everything would work out.

The boy was rushed into the ICU, and Shastri stood in the hospital corridor. Just as he began to walk out, his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a message from Vikram.

"Appa, I tried calling you. Your phone was not reachable. Something amazing happened! The college just called me. They’ve offered me a full scholarship! We don’t have to pay a single rupee!"

Shastri stopped, his heart leaping. Tears rolled down as he read the message.
